Wonderful week

Monday, April 25th, 2005

I’m really grateful that God has given me such caring friends. Last week I had my birthday. It’s usually the time when I go into hiding so that it will pass without any events (perhaps traumatised by pranks done on birthday people in the past). But my friends won’t let me :)

My boss treated me to a nice yum cha lunch (always love the egg tarts), then get to enjoy a cake with the other colleagues (for soon-to-be-birthday-boy Adi and me). Erico’s ex-bridal party tried to make a surprise party. The surprise part failed because of Erico’s inability to trick people :) Had a nice dinner+dessert+cake and chat and laugh that night. Some of the chat centered around how fun pemuda (youth) used to be (felt really old hehe).

Then our bible study group got together last night for steamboat, games and anime movie session. Food was really delicious (and lots of them too). They (Tris?) managed to come up with an inventive game using 3 laptops and internet. So, between Ken using my semi-broken laptop (number 1 key not working!), my inability to use Jo’s iBook (where’s the Home key???), and Vic’s unreliable laptop (crash!!) and his dodgy method of trying to win (select all, copy, paste), we had lots of fun and laughter. Finished late, so fortunately today is a holiday to recuperate (and unsuccessfully trying to tidy my apartment).

I got a really nice tennis bag (looks way better than my racquette) and a handsome jacket for presents. So thank you God, and thank you friends for a wonderful wonderful week.

Update: Tris has got a more detailed recollection of what happen on that night at his place

Japanese RPG movie

Saturday, April 23rd, 2005

This page from engadget has a link to a flash movie about retro game consoles in the style of japanese RPG game (actually it completely takes after FF6/FF3 - IMO one of the best games ever). Very very cool if you’ve ever played Final Fantasy on Super Nintendo.

Simple yet wonderful. But I’m not going to get one, I’d rather enjoy my sleep :)

ADSL2+

Wednesday, April 20th, 2005

Read here (from SMH).

Wow, that’s like 48x my current internet speed. I wonder if we need the speed, but if they can get it to reasonable (cheap) price, bring it on.

Now waiting for news about ADSL2++ or ADSL3.

Personal flying vehicle

From CNet News

Seems like personal flying vehicle is soon to be quite “affordable”. Wonder if there’s one flying around, and it’s suddenly out of control… Those propeller blades look dangerous…

Technology bites back

Sunday, April 10th, 2005

This article from SMH talks about how technology can create more problems. The advice is to be selective in using techonology. How true… how true.

Internet-less

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

My ADSL internet connection has been down for a couple of weeks. The modem got disconnected not long after it successfully connected to the ISP. First I thought it’s just a hiccup on the part of Exetel or Telstra. After a few days I started checking out the user forum to see if anyone else is affected. No one. Then I filed a complaint to Exetel. After a Telstra’s technician investigated the problem, he claimed that my ADSL modem is faulty.

At first I doubt it, as the modem has served me so well for almost 2 years, and the wireless and ethernet are still working fine. But I called Netgear’s support anyway, and the support guy told me to deliver the modem to their warehouse and they will replace it. Darwin helped me to drop the modem and the power supply on monday, and today I got it back. Spanking brand new modem/router/wireless shrink-wrapped together with new rj45 cable, telephone extension and ADSL filter. Nice. Plugged that in, and internet is back.

I discovered that after almost 2 years of always on internet, it felt unusual not to have access to the internet. Maybe some people view this as mild addiction, but it’s just so convenient to have information at your fingertip (TV guide, weather, soccer news, etc). Fortunately in my neighbourhood there’s an unsecured wireless network, so I managed to piggy-backed onto their internet connection :)

However, whenever I was in Indo, I did not miss the internet so much. Maybe because I have my parents and sisters around. Could it be that in heaven we won’t miss this world so much because we will be so close to our God as well?
