Positions available

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

The company I am working at (Holocentric) is looking for a programmer and possibly an office admin (this one they’ve tried and almost given up).

Since we are a small company, the programmer needs to be self-motivated, esp. in problem-solving part. I often had little help in my work, and had to scour the web or mailing list or whatever to find the solution. Also besides the technical skill, the person we are looking for need to be quite good in English language. He/She will need to write up some documents (in part because I’m lacking in this area hehehe). So, if you are up for challenges, you can contact me, and I’ll pass on your resume to be considered.

The other position is a part-time office admin. Perhaps about 4-5 hours/day. Need to be good in english and also self-motivated. Sometimes there might not be enough work in the office, so we will prefer someone who can just invent work to make the office/company better, for example massage my back :). The jobs will mainly be organising training courses, answering phones, taking messages, and whatever admin people do to make the office run smoothly.

Ok, hopefully there are some good candidates around.

Free Desktop Widgets

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Konfabulator was recently bought by Yahoo, and the first change is to make the program free of charge. If you don’t know what desktop widgets are, they are small programs that appears on your computer desktop doing small tasks like displaying weather, calendar, clock, etc. And konfabulator is quite easy to use and configure.

I have been using similar programs called Rainmeter and Rainlendar for sometime. They are harder to configure and has less capability than konfabulator (at that time konfabulator is not free), but they consume less memory. So I don’t think I’ll switch yet, unless I see something really useful (and I upgrade my laptop memory).

So for those of you with extra memory available, these widgets will make your desktop looks spiffy.

Jakarta ID card to use Smart Card

Thursday, July 21st, 2005

This article from Kompas said that Jakarta will replace the Indonesian ID cards with Smart Cards. Well the content actually said that they are looking into replacing the ID cards, but that didn’t stop the journalist to claim in the headline that it will happen. This is quite interesting if it does happen (I still carry my ID card, even when I’m in Sydney). One thing is certain, the cost will be huge. Jakarta has probably somewhere around 10 million people.

Really2 busy with work for the past couple of weeks. Day, night and weekends :(
CEO wants something done with high expectation and not enough time plus low resources. One time I went back from office 12 midnight. My immediate boss (CTO) is even worse, once he went home 5am, only to return at 9.30am. Hopefully we get a breather soon… will be good to put this particular project behind us…

On the other hand, looking forward to retreat this weekend. Bus is leaving in 1 hour, and I haven’t packed up! Ciao.

Interesting article from SMH

Who’s the master?

I think this is a tough situation for people in the workforce (or the world for matter of fact). To be satisfied with what we have.

The mysteries of the universe

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

Today I had a not so good fortune of having to work during the weekend. Been really busy this past week (and the weeks to come!). Anyway, haven’t made much progress, and really bored, so I browse the internet for news. Found 2 that might be of interest to some.

I like good design. Well-designed products excites me, though it’s almost always just admiration from afar. I seldom buy stuff. Anyway, found this Industrial Excellence Awards news from Yahoo.

Then also came across this Top 25 questions facing science. Some of these questions are quite fascinating. Seems like all these mysteries point to the fact that there’s a creator. The universe is too much of a coincidence to happen by accident. Paul wrote about this in his letter to the Romans in Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Our group has started to look into Romans, which is really an interesting letter. So much is said in that letter that sometimes it’s hard to take it all in. Anyway… back to work…

Mimin hitam (Black Mimin)

Friday, July 1st, 2005

That’s the title of a comic I used to read back in primary school (a looong time ago). I still remember the new edition came out every wednesday, and I’d buy that as soon as the school bookshop opened. I always wonder where the comic came from.
Just found out it’s from Mexico called Memin Penguin, and it’s now in the middle of a ‘controversy’. From my memory of the book, it doesn’t promote racial hatred or ridicule, so the complaints are probably nothing. Tintin (Herge) had similar stereotype in it as well. In fact, I remembered it brought out racial issues (he was duped into thinking he couldn’t go to heaven because there is no ‘black’ angels in church paintings), poverty (his best friend has to steal because he was so poor), and family bonds (Mimin always call his mum ‘my beloved mum’). As you can see, I have fond memories with this comic, too bad the indonesian version never finished.
Have you read this comic?
