Freak Football Accident

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Here is a story of some bizarre injuries happening to soccer players.

Have a look at the last entry, about an Indonesian footballer killed by stampeding pigs on training pitch. I thought it’s the Indonesian football fans that are dangerous. Apparently you have to watch out for pigs too.

OpenOffice 2.0

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Finally, OpenOffice released version 2 of their office suite. It’s been in beta and testing stages for quite a long time.

I’ve been using the software for sometime (since version 1). It’s really good, does all the things that I wanted (opening/editing/creating Word/Excel/Powerpoint files). Highly recommended for those without an office software, or using unlicensed/pirated Microsoft Office.

Cancelled cards when used overseas

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

I just read this article from SMH saying that you can get your Australian credit card cancelled/reissued when used in some countries that are hotspots for fraud. The suggestion is to give the bank your travel itinerary if plan to go to Indonesia, Malaysia, etc.

The bad thing is that the banks never notify the customers about this. Their reasoning is that they don’t want the customers to limit their spending (i.e. not to use their cards). If you use the cards, it will be cancelled. If you don’t, the bank don’t get their money (from the card usage). The best thing for them is to keep quiet so that you use their cards, then cancelled them. Customers inconvenience be damned, they got their money. Just another practice of the greed of Australian banks.

Plague on World of Warcraft

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

This is a funny story I found on CNET.

First there’s a bug in the online game World of Warcraft. The bug behaves like a plague, infecting other characters around an infected character. Low level characters died, while the high level ones survived. That sort of created a panic in the community, and some academic thought it’s a good idea to do a study on what will happen if an epidemic would occur in real life.

Hmm, gaming can be useful after all. I better consider quitting my job, make games and save the world literally :)

Did you know that…

Condemned prisoners facing death in Texas cannot have a cigarette as part of their meal - for health reasons!

Oh the irony. I read this on Ripley’s believe it or not.

Music is good for the heart

Saturday, October 8th, 2005

This article from Reuters health said that listening to music affect heart rate and breathing, causing us to relax (and aroused for faster music). Alternating between slow and faster music seems to produce beneficial effect.

Good to know this since I listen to rock and classical music (though there are fast classical music as well).

Pulang Kampung

Saturday, October 8th, 2005

Hmm, haven’t been writing new entries since I went back to Indonesia. What can I say about Indo? It’s my homeland and where most of my relatives are. So I still have the desire to go back there. At the moment it’s got a lot of problems economically, politically (corrupt officials), and many more.

I managed to go back to Pontianak (in Borneo/Kalimantan), the hometown of my parents. I still have lots of family members, including a dentist uncle (got my 2 wisdom teeth taken out as well). I even managed to visit the village where my pa is born and raised. It’s a really2 small village. There are perhaps only 10-20 houses in that area. Life was certainly very hard when my parents grew up as kids. One interesting fact is that according to my pa the coastline is not close to where his house was, but now I saw that it’s just perhaps 20 metres away from the house. Global warming seems to raise the sea level.
